Overview
Campbellton Road is an important thoroughfare in southwest Atlanta, running west from the Oakland City MARTA station and Fort McPherson to Greenbriar Mall and I-285. The 5.5-mile-long corridor runs through many well established neighborhoods: low-density single-family development makes up more than half of the corridor. The nearby Venetian Hills Elementary School was named a 2007 Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education for its excellent performance, and Adams Park Library and the Southwest Atlanta YMCA are great community resources. Historically, Campbellton Road served as the community’s primary business and commercial destination, a thriving corridor serving Atlanta’s African American upper class. Campbellton Plaza, developed in the 1950s, is one of Atlanta’s first commercial strip centers: Still in use today, the plaza is ripe for redevelopment. Fort McPherson, a recently closed army base, anchors the eastern end of the corridor. The McPherson Planning Local Redevelopment Authority announced an ambitious re-use plan in September 2007 that includes plans for a research park, a historic “main street” area and mixed-use development. Eventually, Atlanta’s “Peachtree corridor” could extend all the way to Fort McPherson, providing greater access and opportunity for developments in the Campbellton area.
